We are focused on promoting quality health care and healthy lifestyles within American Indian (AI) families and communities in North Carolina through research, education, and advocacy.

FACTS

  • North Carolina is home to an estimated 120,000 American Indians, the largest population east of the Mississippi River and the sixth largest in the United States.
  • There are eight state recognized American Indian tribes in NC. One is nationally recognized.
  • NC is home to at least 100 American Indian physicians, one of the largest populations of American Indian physicians in the United States.
  • American Indians suffer more from chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart diseases than the general population at-large.
  • American Indians have higher rates of physical inactivity and obesity and are more likely to report that they currently have no health insurance. Due to the cost than other racial and ethnic groups in the state, it is more difficult to have affordable healthcare.
  • Harmful use of tobacco, including smoked and smokeless tobacco, is higher for American Indians that the general population.
